Google I/O is an annual developer conference held in San Fransisco focused on building web, mobile and enterprise applications with Google and open web technologies.

The "I" and "O" stand for input/output, and "Innovation in the Open". This conference is all about how individual developers anywhere in the world can be benefited with the Open source technology and also provide their inputs to make a better Software.

This year the Google IO conference started on 25th June, 2014. This I/O was concentrated on the mobile momentum and the evolution of the mobile platform but also there were major updates for Chromebooks and Chromecasts.

Google also disclosed its merger with Appurify thus acquiring the most sophisticated mobile device cloud testing service.

Appurify is a broad and extensive testing platform for mobile devices both iOS and Android. One of the main feature of this platform is that it runs functional and performance test in cloud on real devices.

The redesign of Android L by introducing Material Design is not only user friendly but it will also help the developers and designers to create state-of-the-art applications.

Material Design adds depth to pixels

Android L not just has a new design but rather 5000 new APIs have been added for burst-mode camera , improved AV sync, improved battery stat data, bluetooth 4.1, etc.

Android L runs exclusively on Google’s ART runtime. That means faster apps and better performance, without (most) developers having to do anything to their apps.

This conference clearly stated that Android is not limited to handheld mobile devices only . With the introduction of Android Auto : for cars, Android TV, Android Wear , Google wants to cover a whole new Market.

Talking about the market share, it was stated that still less than 10% of the world's population has access to smartphones. To overcome this figure Google came up with a new program "Android One".

Android One is  a collaboration of hardware manufactures from around the world where the software
and its updates are provided by google itself .

Google has chosen India to start with this program , with collaborating with

The goal here is to get “high quality smartphones” to scale, to get “the next billion” people online.

Google has hinted that there is a lot to gain in the wearable devices segment.

Samsung Gear Live

Android Wear makes it easier for developers to reach users on these devices, using the exact same tools they’re already using. Samsung Gear Live, Moto 360 and LG's G smartwatch are already up and running with Android Wear.

Android Wear supports both round and square displays because there will be a wide array of fashionable choices.

Google has redesigned the Android platform for automobiles. After looking at what people do in their cars today, and these things stood out:
  • Navigation
  • Communication
  • Music

Audi Featuring Android Auto

Users can connect their Android phone to a car with the Android Auto software, granting access to turn-by-turn navigation from Google Maps, custom music playlists, and communication channels such as text messages and phone calls — all with voice recognition.

Android Auto is contextually aware, to give you the information you need, right when you want it.
Google also made its push in the connected car space with Android Auto, a new initiative that imports the Android experience from a smartphone into a car. Users can connect their Android phone to a car with the Android Auto software, granting access to turn-by-turn navigation from Google Maps, custom music playlists, and communication channels such as text messages and phone calls — all with voice recognition. All of these features can also be controlled with buttons that exist on a car dashboard or steering wheel. - See more at: http://blog.appannie.com/google-io-2014-highlights-android-expands-new-screens/#sthash.luONTOPq.dpuf

Google also unveiled Android TV, which brings Android apps and games to the living room.

Android TV is a software platform that’s built into select set-top boxes TVs. With the Android TV SDK, you can design an Android app that’s made for a TV. Android TV also supports Google Cast technology, allowing you to broadcast content from your mobile device onto a TV.

Android TV

For game developers and publishers, Android TV is putting a lot of emphasis on gaming. Games can now be designed for Android TV and played with using a game controller.

One of the weirdest thing at this IO was a piece of cardboard, When Sundar Pichai announced that every one present at the convention will get a Cardboard, it was considered as a joke.

Turns out that Cardboard is no joke. Once it’s assembled, you just plop an Android phone inside, then load up the companion Cardboard app.

From here, you can run several virtual reality demos, complete with head tracking through the phone’s accelerometers and gyroscopes. You can look around a virtual Hall of Mirrors, fly through any country with your head as the steering wheel, view YouTube videos as if you’re sitting in a movie theater and explore 360-degree panoramic photos.
